Different Types of Door Locks

If you are considering buying locks for your business or home, there are a number of different options to choose from and it can be quite overwhelming. The wide range of lock systems also means there are different aspects to consider before purchasing them. Here we take a look at the different types of door locks and where they can be used:

  1. Padlocks

These are the only type of locks that aren’t attached to doors. They are available in a variety of sizes, are portable and freestanding. The different types of padlocks include keyed and combination. Keyed padlocks have options such as- non-rekeyable and rekeyable padlocks. With non-rekeyable padlocks, you can’t change the key used to open the lock and have to use the one that comes with it. Combination locks have dials that open them when the right combination is entered. These can be quite easy to shim open or decode.

  1. Deadbolts

These are typically used on external doors and come in a number of different variants-lockable thumbturn, single, and double. The single cylinder deadbolts are more common but have a weakness- It’s easier to access these using simple tools inserted through the peephole or an adjacent window.

Double cylinder deadbolts use key cylinders on the inside as well as the exterior of the door to solve this problem. You can also opt for a hybrid deadbolt that’s a mix of a double and single system. This is also referred to as a lockable thumbturn.

  1. Knob Locks

These are generally installed in residential settings along with deadbolts on exterior doors. Sometimes, they may also be utilised as the primary security systems for doors. But this is something you should avoid at all costs. Their structure makes it easy for them to be bypassed using a wrench or pliers or broken using a hammer. It’s a good idea to replace knob locks with passage knobs in addition to deadbolts on the same door.

  1. Lever handle locks

These are generally used in commercial settings, for internal doors. They have large pushdown type handles rather than knobs and are easier to open than the latter. This is why it’s a good idea to use these only for internal doors rather than exterior ones. If you need additional security in a specific space or room, you can install a proximity lock on the door.

Expert Door Lock Installation

There are a number of other locks available such as privacy sets, smart locks, digital locks, and more. While it’s always great to have a wide choice, it can sometimes become very difficult to decide which locks will provide the best levels of security in your particular setting. This is where the services of an experienced and licensed locksmith come into the picture.

You can have detailed discussions with them and tell them what your specific requirements are. They will assess the quality and condition of the existing locks, before making recommendations on which systems would work best for you. They will ensure that the actual installation is also handled expertly in order to maintain the warranty on the locks systems.
